Vietnamese universities break into QS World University Rankings
The Vietnam National University, HCM City and Vietnam National University, Hanoi have been ranked in the groups 701-1,000 in the QS World University Rankings 2019.
The Vietnam National University, HCM City is in the group 701-750 and the Vietnam National University, Hanoi is in group 801-1,000.
Nguyen Huu Duc, deputy head of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said the World University Rankings emphasise research more than the Asia University Rankings. Hanoi National University maintained its 139th ranking and Ho Chi Minh City National University climbed five places to 142nd in the QS Asia University Rankings last year.
Universities continue to be evaluated according to six metrics of academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio. The highest weighting of the metrics is academic reputation which accounts for 40% of the scores, followed by citations per faculty and faculty-student ratio which account for 20% each.
This year, 4,763 universities from 151 countries were evaluated and 1,000 universities from 85 countries were selected in the final rankings based on the surveys conducted with 1,2 million scientists and Elsevier’s Scopus database.
According to Duc, the rankings proved that the teaching quality of Vietnam National University, HCM City and Vietnam National University, Hanoi is reaching up to international standards and widely recognised with more publications and citations.
He went on to say that during a conference about how to build outstanding universities with perspective from Russia and emerging countries held in Moscow in May, many educators had agreed that the potential of a nation was measured by the number of excellent universities, not its military.
“The results show that the government’s education reform is a right step. The authorities should invest more into universities with potential so that more universities will get into top 1,000 and even in the top 200,” Duc said.
