Thailand and Myanmar have vowed to stimulate tourism and raise the number of visitors between the neighbouring nations to 1.5 million by 2020 as part of the “two countries, one destination” cooperative scheme.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) signed a memorandum of understanding last Friday with the Myanmar Tourism Federation to promote tourism between the countries.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said Myanmar boasts high potential for tourism because of its natural and cultural resources.

The TAT was ordered to study the possibility of launching joint marketing programmes with Myanmar and other countries such as Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, as well as the viability of code-sharing aviation routes, specifically for Phuket-Ranong-Myeik and Chiang Mai-Mandalay-Bagan.

In 2016, the number of travellers who visited both countries on the same trip totalled 490,000. Myanmar welcomed 2.9 million foreign tourists in 2016, a decrease by 38% from the previous year, reported Myanmar’s Ministry of Hotels and Tourism. In 2015, 4.68 million travellers visited Myanmar.

Of total visitors last year, over 1 million used Yangon’s international airport as the entry point.

Over 700,000 came from Thailand, the biggest source, followed by China, Japan and South Korea.

By nationality, Thai visitors topped the list at 207,000. Myanmar also welcomed 126,500 Chinese, 95,400 Japanese and 63,000 Koreans.

Mr Somkid said Myanmar authorities have asked Thailand to help provide an intensive training programme on Thai language for local guides and tourism management courses for Myanmar’s local tourism operators, citing Thailand’s success in drawing 32 million foreign tourists in 2016.

He also suggested Myanmar authorities develop more community products to generate tourism income for locals. In addition, they should establish official tourism websites to provide information on tourism websites to provide information on tourism, said Mr Somkid.

He said Myanmar should focus on quality visitors and learn from Thai experiences, noting excessive visitors with a lack of proper management will lead to deterioration of tourism sites.

Sansiri ready to head back upcountry

SET-listed developer Sansiri Plc is back to building condominiums in provincial areas this year, buoyed by recovering demand, after having frozen developments during 2014-2016.

Senior executive vice-president Uthai Uthaisangsuk said the company plans to develop two condo projects upcountry this year — one in Chiang Mai and another one in an undisclosed province — with combined investment value of 2.6 billion baht.

Two new provincial projects will be in the low-end segment with prices between 1-3 million baht a unit.

Sansiri now runs two low-end brands: The Base and dcondo.

“Provincial market sentiment is improving, and we see it’s an opportune time to make new condominium supply for the provincial market,” he said.

Sansiri currently has total inventory worth a combined 3-4 billion baht in the provincial market. About 90% are condo units which have been complete since 2015.

Sansiri was very aggressive in the provincial property market during 2012-2013, but myriad negative factors such as political turmoil and a cloudy economy led it to temporarily hit the breaks.

Meanwhile, Mr Uthai said Sansiri’s core segment remains middle- to high-end condominiums, priced above 3 million baht and 10 million baht, respectively.

Sansiri last month said it would launch 19 projects worth a combined 41.2 billion baht this year, aiming to secure 16% growth in presales to 36 billion.

Of the 19 new projects, eight will be condominiums worth 21.9 billion baht, accounting for 53% of total sales value. Nine more accounting for 45% will be single house projects worth 18.5 billion baht. Two town house sites worth 800 million baht will account for 2%.

Among the new condo projects, four worth a combined 12 billion baht will be developed via a joint venture with BTS Group Holdings Plc. During 2015-16, they launched a total of eight projects worth a combined 30 billion baht, of which 70% was sold.

Sansiri and BTS have secured 12 undeveloped land plots to launch the new projects over the next several years.

“We are also now seeking five more land plots to develop residential projects near current and future mass transit lines with a total of 25 sites worth a combined 100 billion baht throughout 2019,” he said.

Thailand’s economy is expected to grow 3.6 percent this year, up from the 3.4 percent previously projected, thanks to higher public spending and improved exports, the finance ministry said on Monday.

Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy has struggled to grow and lagged regional peers since a 2014 army coup ended months of political unrest. Exports and domestic demand have been weak, putting pressure on the junta to lift domestic activity.

On Friday, the government approved an additional 190 billion baht ($5.4 billion) in spending this fiscal year, which ends in September. It will mainly be spent in rural areas.

Economic growth in 2016 is now estimated at 3.2 percent, compared with 3.3 percent predicted three months ago, Krisada Chinavicharana, a ministry official, told reporters.

He said the ministry now expects exports to increase 2.5 percent this year, rather than the 1.8 percent predicted three months ago.

Exports, a key driver of the economy, rose 0.45 percent in 2016, their first increase in four years.

The ministry is more optimistic than the central bank, which forecasts 2017 GDP growth of 3.2 percent and flat exports.

Official 2016 gross domestic product (GDP) data is due Feb. 20. In 2015, the economy expanded 2.8 percent.

The ministry forecasts the central bank’s policy rate to remain unchanged at 1.50 percent throughout this year.
