Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam is making an upscale turn with its premium infrastructure projects like the Metro Lines (MRT) and International Airport, plus the “One Belt, One Road” initiative that makes it the transportation hub for countries in Europe. Thu Thiem of HCMC is becoming the new CBD, like West Kowloon in Hong Kong. With the new housing law, foreigners can purchase properties and own the titles, adding great value to its property market.

Golden Emperor partnered with CapitaLand, one of the leading property developers in Southeast Asia, to exclusively launch d’Edge, a luxury property located beside Saigon River at Thao Dien, simultaneously in Hong Kong and Vietnam. Contact us to get more information.

A Coffee Guide to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s Coffee Capital

June 23, 2017 Published by: Golden Emperor

Situated in northern Thailand and a popular travel destination for its ornate Buddhist temples, Chiang Mai has a deep connection to coffee — one that has extended in recent years from production and trade to roasting and retail. In Thailand’s primary arabica-growing region, Chiang Mai is also one of the few cities in Thailand where the weather gets cool enough — at least for a month or two out of the year — where the craving for a hot beverage might compete with that for iced coffee.

The region’s arabica market can be credited in part to the previous king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, who initiated the Thai Royal Project in 1969, encouraging people in the northern highlands to invest in sustainable industries. The goal was to alleviate poverty and create a more environmentally friendly economy, while curtailing “slash and burn” farming practices associated with opium production.

As a “forest crop,” coffee made sense as an alternative, yet production has fluctuated since Thailand first began exporting coffee in the 1970s. While International Coffee Organization statistics from the 2015/16 year show that Thailand exported 500,000 60-kilo bags of coffee, domestic consumption reached 1.2 million bags. In Chiang Mai, these two worlds collide.

623E

Today, it’s difficult to walk a block on Chiang Mai’s Nimman Avenue without bumping into someone peddling coffee — weather in a fancy, glass-encased building with copious AC and wifi, or from a cart parked on the street corner. Big chains like Starbucks are also represented, but there are dozens of quaint spots that can be a bit harder to find. Here are a few starting points in the guide to Chiang Mai coffee:

623D

Nine One Coffee

The story behind Nine One Coffee is beautifully simple. A local man named Wullop Pasananon obtained a plot of land on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. He learned that it was perfect for coffee growing and started teaching himself everything about coffee. Now he grows, roasts, and brews coffee for his own shop. As his business has grown, he now also supplies wholesale coffees to surrounding shops. Nine One is tucked into a sides street off Nimman Road. Its quaint decor and friendly staff offer an unassuming atmosphere amid the bustling Nimman neighborhood.

623C

Akha Ama

Akha Ama is another company that ties all of Chiang Mai’s coffee elements together, acting as green coffee producer and roaster while boasting a lovely shop presence in the Old City neighborhood. Finding success domestically as well as through coffee tourism bolstered by international media profiles, Akha Ama has helped to define the seed-to-cup concept in Chiang Mai under the ownership of Lee Ayu Chuepa.

The name Akha Ama comes from a combination of the hill tribe that produces this coffee and the Akha language word for mother, respectively. In 2010, the Akha people stopped selling coffee in cherry to middlemen and instead implemented intercropping and multicropping to help create differentiation, while marketing and selling the coffee themselves. The project proved so successful in building quality that the coffee was in later years selected as a compulsory coffee in the World Cup Tasters Championship.

623B

Asama Cafe

I went to Asama Cafe the morning before a flight down to Bangkok. As it turned out, Asama is located well off the beaten path. My ride from the west side of the Ping River to a neighborhood on the southeast edge of the city left both the driver and myself confused. Eventually we found a pink wall with the Asama sign, and once inside I encountered a small square with a two-group Kees van der Westen espresso machine atop the counter, opening to a wide window overlooking a calm lake. Owned by a WBC-certified judge who goes by the name Mook, the cafe features coffees from renowned roasters from throughout the world, including on my visit an offering from Madcap Coffee from my home state of Michigan.

Ristr8to Lab

Claiming inspiration from Australia to San Francisco, the Ristr8to Lab is the third retail café for Chiang Mai-based Ristr8to. It boasts three distinct areas: the self-explanatory Roasting Lab; the Cult Coffee & Coffee in Good Spirit bar, which features “cult” coffee favorites from roasters around the world in signature alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks; and the “Satan Coffee Corner,” where Ristr8to features its own single-origins through multiple manual brew methods.

Various interesting arts, sports and tourism activities will be held during the cave festive season 2017 that will kick off in the central province of Quang Binh on June 17. Based on the theme “Kingdom of the Caves: Magnificence–Legendary”, the event aims to promote Quang Binh province’s natural resources and tourism products to attract more tourists. The opening ceremony will be celebrated at Bao Ninh Sea Square on June 17 with performances by many renowned Vietnamese musicians. A ceremony to grant the world record status to the cave system in the province will also be held within the programme.

622C

In the framework of Quang Binh Cave Festival 2017 held in Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province, Quang Binh Provincial People’s Committee received two world record certificates for Son Doong Cave in Son Trach Commune, Bo Trach District. Accordingly, Son Doong Cave is certified as the largest cave and the most beautiful natural cave in the world by World Record Association and World Records Union.

Son Doong Cave was formed 2-5 million years ago, when the river flowed through the limestone mountain area and was buried. The water eroded limestone and created an underground tunnel. In soft limestone areas, the collapse of tunnel ceiling formed large holes which became giant domes afterward.

According to the provincial People’s Committee, from June 1, the Hanoi– Dong Hoi air route operated by Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air and Vasco were launched to meet the increasing travel demands of tourists.

In the first five months of the year, Quang Binh received and provided services to more than 81,000 tourists, up 111 percent compared with the same period last year. Major tourist attractions include Dong Hoi city, Vung Chua–Yen Island, Phong Nha–Ke Bang National Park, Chay River–Dark Cave and Heaven Cavern.

622b

Vietnamese Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Hoang Tuan Anh met with Singaporean President Tony Keng Yam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on the sideline of the opening of Sea Games 28 on 5 June 2015. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said his country would enhance cooperation with Vietnam in culture, sports, and tourism in line with the Vietnam-Singapore bilateral strategic partnership. He said he was impressed by Vietnam’s Son Doong cave, the biggest cave in the world, and wanted to explore it if he visits Vietnam.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is hosting honeymoon trips for six celebrity couples from China under the 4th Romance in Thailand project.  Taking place from 17 to 23 May, the hosted couples have been enjoying a range of Northern Thai experiences packaged to promote romantic activities and attractions in Chiang Mai and boost the province’s standing as a preferred honeymoon destination.

621n

Under the theme, “Amazing Romance in Thailand 5.20 @ Chiang Mai”, the six loving couples have been experiencing a range of local activities in different areas of Chiang Mai. These include spa treatments, afternoon tea, merit-making in local temples, elephant bathing, and Thai cooking lessons. Members of the Chinese media were also invited along, meaning that all activities undertaken by the celebrity couples would be reported via online and offline publications as well as shared via social media channels, showcasing some of the many activities Chiang Mai offers to couples.

Ms. Runjuan Thongrut, TAT Director of East Asian Region, said “The Romance in Thailand project has been running successfully for four years. And, as Chiang Mai was awarded the Best Honeymoon Destination in 2016 from Ctrip.com, the largest online travel agent in China, we are promoting the charms of the North to newlyweds and couples. Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s most romantic destinations so we’d like the guests on this trip to inspire other Chinese couples to choose the North for their honeymoons.”
621A
The “Amazing Romance in Thailand 5.20 @ Chiang Mai”, is so called, to mark 20 May, which is celebrated as the day of love in China. This tradition comes from the fact that the pronunciation for the date 5.20 (the fifth month and 20th day) sounds like the Chinese pronunciation of “I love you.” So on 20 May the couples came together for a romantic Lanna Dinner at the 137 Pillars House Hotel Chiang Mai, where they dressed in Northern Thai costume and sample authentic local dishes.

Ms. Runjuan added, “We want the “Amazing Romance in Thailand 5.20 @ Chiang Mai” to help spread awareness of the romantic side of Chiang Mai to over five million potential Chinese travellers, and to encourage quality Chinese tourists to make Thailand their honeymoon destination and help increase sales of honeymoon packages among Chinese travellers.”

The activity is jointly arranged by the TAT offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Kunming and Chengdu.

621B

In 2017, TAT expects Thailand to welcome at least nine million visitors from China and generate some 570 billion Baht for the Thai tourism industry. Of these, TAT anticipates about 2,000 honeymoon couples with an average trip expenditure of around 80,000 Baht or approximately 200 million Baht in total.
